Another pitch for Project Feeder Watch

It's not too late to join Project Feeder Watch for the 08-09 season.
As they say on their site, helping birds is easy:
1) put up a feeder
2) count the birds
3) submit your data to the scientists

New this year there is a special section of resources for homeschoolers, including a free science module using Project Feeder Watch.

You'll be gathering data which helps scientists determine bird populations and trends. It's not very time consuming. You don't need to watch all the time! You just set a time on two consecutive days per week during which you'll watch out the window every once in a while & note what you observe. There are detailed instructions for how to select your observation times and how to count your birds - make sure you follow the instructions carefully as science depends on proper data collection.

It's easily worked into a homeschool schedule, and it's fun!

Birders will also be interested in a new blog from the Cornell Ornithology department. Hints, tips, science, and great photos!

**photos in this post are not great per se, but just a sample of what we've seen at our house: pileated woodpecker, baby robins hatching under the deck, northern flicker.

Thank you for the inspiration - I have now re-purposed my washing line as a big bird feeder and am thoroughly enjoying an excuse to watch the birds!
