When you see a movie for the first time in a theater, you (hopefully) enjoy your couple hours and then it's over. If you really loved it and if your wallet can handle it, maybe you'll go to see it again. And then you wait for the DVD.
But if your first exposure to a film is the DVD, well then, just as the title says, you watch until you get bored of it.
Star Wars was the first movie I saw in a Canadian movie theater. I think it was at the Capitol 6 on Granville. The second movie was A Spy Who Loved Me, several months later. The only English I spoke then consisted of handy conversations such as
Good Afternoon. How do you do?
I am very well, thank you.
I am mending my frock.
Turns out you don't need to speak English to understand Star Wars.
I was ten.
Hugo is ten. So in a leap of completely unfounded logic, I decided he was ready for Star Wars. Never mind that a fair chunk of my tv watching had consisted of grainy black & white war documentaries and the occasional field trip to a concentration camp, while we had raised our kids free of cable TV and with only pre-selected, fairly tame videos.
He actually was ready. And loves, loves, loves it. So much that I expect we'll be watching it daily for the next month or so.
Well, it's no great hardship. Though I get a little wistful looking at the young Harrison - I'm not so sure he's aging well - I'm not exactly forcing myself. Young Harrison is easy on the eyes.
Star Wars didn't really stick with me. I'm pretty sure that prior to this ongoing DVD'athon, I had only seen this movie that one time, way back in '77. I am quite sure I saw the one that follows because I have a memory of a scene from it. I know I haven't seen any since. Roo had to explain the weird numbering thing & it took him quite some time to explain why episode IV was the oldest movie.
Well, maybe now, I'll actually get all the references at Help me, Obi-Mom Kenobi!

"the occasional field trip to a concentration camp" - OK, that's going to need some explaining...
And for the record, I am irrationally happy that Hugo is enjoying Star Wars.
