My verdict on the yarn - OK but a bit too itchy for my taste.

The yarn is variegated and the stripes end up that way naturally?
How many stitches did you cast on?
I cast on 52 stitches.
And yes, the yarn is self-striping. If you google the name of the yarn, you'll find it in lots of online stores; it comes in a variety of color combos.
