You see? Today's schools are pointless

"Strikes and lockouts in schools do not impair student learning even when they last for weeks or months, the B.C. Teachers' Federation told the B.C. Labour Relations Board, as union members began voting Tuesday on possible strike action."

"We have had job actions in the past that have been up to three-months' duration without significant impact on the student body," the union's lawyer Diane MacDonald told a hearing that is considering what service withdrawal is permitted under a Liberal law that made education an essential service in 2001.

Full story

Because education is now an essential service, the BCTF has found itself in the strange position of trying to convince the Labour Relations board that going on full strike does not affect the students.

Which rather begs the question - what the heck is the point of the school?

I don't disagree with what they're saying. Most of the time, school as it exists today is a waste of time.

This story contrasts nicely with the situation in Great Britain, where parents are being increasingly strongly discouraged from taking their kids out for holidays during term time. Read more HERE and HERE. Their plan is called Every Lesson Counts.

Well, not in BC.
