Burns Bog on fire

Burns bog is the largest undeveloped urban landmass in North America and is home to many beautiful and rare plants and animals. I blogged about it (with pictures) earlier this year.

It's only a bit to the south of me and it's on fire. So far about 170 hectares have burned. The thing with bogs is that they're made of peat, and peat likes to burn. Peat can burn underground for long distances, and then pop up to the surface. It's a devil to fight fires in a bog. It's dangerous to walk on the ground because it can literally suck you in. Burns bog has been on fire before though, and just as with forest fires, there are some envirnonmentalists who believe fires are ultimately beneficial: by clearing out some groundcover they regenarate the ecosystem.

But the city is covered with smoke. And I have ash on my windowsills.
