Wow, they grow fast!

Our little baby butterfly larvae are getting huge! They started out about 1 cm long. They've been pigging out and are about 2.5 cm now. We're starting to see some silky thread stuff in their little containers so maybe they'll be spinning their chrysalises soon.

It was quite hot here on Friday and Saturday so perhaps that's the reason for the quick development.

Yesterday I went to my Romance Writers meeting. We had Michael Slade as guest speaker. He writes thrillers - very horrific thrillers. It was interesting to hear his plotting ideas, his discussion about male POV, and his tips on creating suspense and tension in a novel. And it's always great to hang out with writers for a day. I find it really re-energizes me and gets me all excited about my work.

I also managed to knit a fair whack of my daughter's poncho during the meeting.

Roo and the kids hung around at home, built more rockets, watched a Popular Mechanics for Kids DVD and went out for slurpees when they were about to meltdown (physically & emotionally). So a good day for all.

An aside

Has there ever been a time when the fashion of the day has been more out of synch with the reality of women's bodies?

I mean, here we are, in the midst of an obesity epidemic. More and more of us are finding it hard to keep the pounds off. And where does the fat like to congregate? Tummies, bums, thigs.

But the look of the day is one which only an anorexic model can possiblylook good in; and that's only if she's doesn't bend over. I'm all for people wearing whatever makes them feel good. And there's no reason that a woman who is overweight can't follow fashion if that's what she likes to do. But low rise pants and crop tops are just not kind to anyone with any weight to spare. The resulting look might be fashionable, but it is hardly flattering.

As a further aside, when I was at the salon getting my funky highlights on Thursday, I binged on the silly magazines that you always find in salons. And guess what? The fashion runways showed very few bared midriffs for this summer. The pant waistlines were slowly creeping up and they were topped with longer tops. But alas, our stores are still pushing this totally unwearable crap. And our streets are filled with jiggly rolls spilling out of the tops of pants & the bottoms of little lycra shirts. Belly dancers can get away with it. But on the street in daylight, slumping along to the bus stop, it's just a bit, um, unappetizing.
