Election day is over....

I had such a busy day yesterday that I had to leave myself notes all over the place to remember to vote. I had a fear that I might get so busy that I'd forget.

I can't imagine not voting. I really just can't. I vote in every election I'm eligible for. It's partly because I see it as a duty. But mostly because I see it as such a privilege. Democracy is still very young and precious. It's an amazing concept - we the people get to choose our leaders. And women got the right to vote in Canada less than a 100 years ago. Less than a 100 years ago! To not vote is a slap in the face for all those who worked so hard to make sure that everyone would have an equal voice in selecting our leaders. If you don't like any of the candidates, spoil your ballot. But don't just sit apathetically at home because you can't be bothered!

I didn't forget. Managed to sneak it in just before grabbing a bite for dinner and running off to work at the college. Got home at 11:10 pm (after stopping at the store to pick up more chewy cat treats for my cat, to bribe her with when dosing her with yucky antibiotics) to a home full of awake people watching the election coverage on CBC. The kids gave me a rundown of the results to date; I tortured the cat; then we finally collapsed in bed a bit after midnight.

Unfortunately I need to get everyone up and going this morning as we have tickets to the Vancouver Children's Festival. I had to order these tickets in December to get a discounted school rate and didn't think it through; Wednesday always comes after Tuesday, and Tuesday nights I often work.... Oh well. We'll go to bed early tonight & do a sleep catch-up.

In election news, the drunk driving premier has once again won a majority government. However, the people of BC have sent a strong message of approval for the opposition which went from a miserable 2 seats in the house last time, to what looks like 33. Re-counts will be happening in number of ridings but that's where it stands right now.

I'm still hoping that the referendum question might pass but it's not looking good at all. What a shame. This was our chance to replace the first past the post, winner takes all system with a more democratic, proportional representation system. Well, whichever way it goes, the people have spoken.
