about the Pope

I didn’t stay up late to watch the Pope’s funeral. But I did tape it. I couldn’t help it. I’m Polish, you see. And so I dutifully slotted the tape in to record this moment in history/celebrity funeral. Haven’t actually watched it yet but now if I get the itch to watch it, I can fast forward my way through it.

Some of the best analysis I’ve read about the Pope has been on the Guardian website.

Timothy Garton Ash says “Pope John Paul II was the first world leader.”

Jonathan Steele points out “We are rewriting the history of communism's collapse. It was Gorbachev, not the Pope, who brought the system down.”

The paper’s leader on April 4 pointed out “the two most serious charges against his papacy are the lamentable failure to deal honestly with allegations of child abuse and the Vatican's pernicious opposition to the use of condoms to combat Aids.”
