You know what finally made me get the book? Reports in the media about Roman Catholic cardinals writing articles to debunk it. It's a novel. A novel is a work of fiction. What's there to debunk? I just had to find out.
Hats off to Dan Brown for having a tremendous grasp of pacing. Those pages want to keep flipping in your hands. Several times he overdoes the 'Cliff Hanger' (which just made me sing "Cliff Hanger Hanging from a cliff, and that's why he's called Cliff Hanger"). I also thought there were too many awkward information dumps. "Yes, funny you should ask about that. Let me tell you in a 1000 words why this is relevant......" And heavens above - the people never eat in this book. Nobody seems to go potty either.
The real big problem is that Sauniere's actions are just not credible. They give Langdon and the french chicky-poo lots of reasons to run around but in and of itself it makes no sense for Sauniere to behave as he does.
As for the rest? Opus Dei I'd heard of before. Some misguided zealots who attract a lot of masochists. The Priory of Sion - hmmm; seems a bit fishy to me. The Last Supper - well, of course once you look at it, it's quite clear. But what Leonardo meant is a mystery.
And as for the ending - phooey. Left me flat.
