Merkel says German multicultural society has failed
If you're looking for some background reading on what is driving these conversations in Europe:
Reflections on the Revolution In Europe: Immigration, Islam, and the West
By Christopher Caldwell
Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom
By Bruce Bawer
While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within
By Bruce Bawer
Caldwell's book is the newest & he does an excellent job of especially discussing the demographics. With Europe's falling birth rates, the 'face' of Europe is changing, and changing fast. What implications will that have for Europe as a socio-political entity, when many immigrant populations do not assimilate, have no interest in the 'western' values of the countries they now inhabit, and wish instead to promote the values of their homelands?
Caldwell also very relevantly discusses the economics of immigration, & addresses the thorny issue of whether immigrants boost the economy or not.
Caldwell's book was blurbed by Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the back cover.
Bawer's books drive me nuts because Bawer likes to veer off into anti-left rhetoric, blaming the 'bleeding heart liberals' for all the ills of the world. He also rabbit trails occasionally into US domestic policies. However - his exploration of how the Islamic communities in Europe are functioning, what their goals are, the political correctness which is paralyzing the European institutions in the face of these populations and their demands - that is unparalleled.
If you can read only one, start with Caldwell. If you can sneak in another, have a go at Surrender. While Europe Slept covers much of the same ground & is the one which I threw against the wall most often because Bawer took too many easy pot shots & veered off too much.
