As we all know by now, a water feature is de rigueur this year. Stephen Harper's apparently costs just under $60,000.
Hugo has been wanting a little pond for a couple years now (because having a creek running the entire length of our property is not enough!) & initially he wanted to make his entire raised bed into a pond. I've been stalling on that idea since it seemed overwhelmingly complicated and expensive.
And then, someone on a board I frequent showed how she makes a water garden each year using a large horse watering bucket, and I thought, we can do that. (thanks Vicky!)
As luck would have it, when we bought this house there was a large plastic bin of sand left in the greenhouse. The sand has long been used up in my continuing efforts to keep the dog run grass as grass and soil (as opposed to mud), and the container seems just the right size. We decided to line it as it did have some small cracks in it.
Levelling things is tough in this yard. There are significant slopes here & everything looks topsy turvy. That's mostly fine with soil and plants but not so good with water, so a level had to be used.
Here I am. You can see I'm standing (sort of) upright & the rest of the garden is at all angles. (tomatoes are going into that bed in the forefront, as soon as it's warm enough to take them out of the greenhouse. Gad it's been cold & miserable!)
Roo was pressed into hauling some rocks which were left on the property & also into drilling a hole into a piece of slate.
The hole was for some left over aquarium tubing and a pump, which Hugo stole from an unused cat watering fountain. The kind like this. Rachel was never too thrilled with using it & I'd put it away some years ago. A while back a friend asked me for it for her young kittens. Unfortunately, once I actually found it, Hugo instantly claimed it. A pump! I need a pump! (sorry C!)
Add two water plants, some goldfish (to stop this from becoming a mosquito nursery) and voila!
(Almost) instant serenity water garden.
Hugo is pleased as punch.

Good job Hugo, and my kind of price:)
If he ever wants to go bigger, you know, one footitis, like with boats, there are quite often cheap pond liners on Craigslist:)
