hot dog

Over at Three Woofs and a Woo, The Food Lady posted about a recent scare with her border collie Piper overheating.

Dogs can indeed overheat very quickly. Some dogs seem predisposed to it. And heat stroke can kill, so all dog owners need to be aware of the warning signs, stay alert, and if necessary take steps to cool your dog back down.

Some of us however live with dogs which apparently are the origin of the phrase 'mad dogs and Englishmen'.

It is roasting on this deck. The sliding glass door behind her head is open. The room beyond is nice and cool. There are cool floors, fans, and in fact, until a few moments before this, the air conditioning was on. The house is probably around 20°. Outside in the shade it's close to 30°. I don't want to think about what it was in the sun.

But here lies my dog. Lips pulled back in a grimace, panting away. Want to hear what that sounds like?

For the record, she's not lying here limply because she's become too weak to move herself to a cooler area. She's choosing to be here and she's perfectly fine. I watch her like a hawk but she does this on every sunny day, staying in the heat until she's about ready to combust and then going to hide under the deck stairs where she digs herself a bed in the cool earth.

Silly girl.

That's very funny. I once made a video of my cat playing fetch with a ring, and had to endure a few eye-rolls. I think I might forward this Panting Dog video to them...so they can see that some of us find these things deeply, err, scientific.

Black Jack does the same thing, seeking out the sunniest spots on sweltering days. Also, she drinks so little, it drives me crazy. I thought it was because she came from California, so your post reassured me that some dogs are just like that:)

Ahhhh this is so cute! It must feel as relaxing and enjoyable as a good sauna does for us humans :)
