Hugo's book is on my shelf, waiting to be read. It appeals to me very much, but T. thinks the cover is too "old fashioned." I will sneak it in as a read aloud one of these days. Amelia's is one of those cookbooks that I have baked very little from but enjoyed reading very much anyway. The sugar cookies (for cut-outs), are quite good.

We've read Swallows & Amazons before but Hugo doesn't remember it - it IS old fashioned and very British, with children announcing Oh, I say! Rather! Shall I pass the tea? BUT its great appeal is the freedom of these kids and it's actually a rollicking adventure story with nothing terribly scary but enough suspense to keep interest very high.

The first chapter is a bit slow & you may need to explain it if you don't come from a sailing family but the gist is getting permission to sail to & camp alone on a small island....

I don't think many kids could resist the idea of camping out on an island without adults.

You've hooked me with that "Oh, I say! Rather!..." The kids absolutely eat that stuff up. T. is still doing his impressions of the poetic (and highly dramatic) father swan, dying gracefully (swanlike) in The Trumpet of the Swan. They enjoyed Five Children and It and some other similar stuff, so I'm sure Swallows & Amazons will be a hit.
