TUTS

Theater Under the Stars is a Vancouver tradition, featuring musicals performed outdoors at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. This year they were showing Grease & Oklahoma on alternating nights.

Our guest chose Oklahoma & it was super!

Here we are settling in. We were in the 3rd row, pretty much in the center. For an extra $5/ticket you can reserve your seating and you'll be somewhere near the front. You don't get to select the seats, they just give you the 'best' seats first come/first served when you book them.

And here we are at intermission. Yes, it rained. They had to actually stop the show before the intermission to place a little canopy on the conductor so she wouldn't get soaked. They were also giving out little plastic ponchos for people who weren't prepared for Vancouver. We had jackets & polar fleece blankets and were reasonably cozy. They try to outguess the weather and make the decision whether to go ahead 3 hours before the show. If it's rained out, you can attend on another night. This time they guessed wrong.

It started & stopped raining several times during the show but everyone took it in stride. One of the stagehands had to periodically appear (in cowboy costume) to push the water off the front of the stage. We stopped to snap a picture in front of the stage on our way out.

If you go:
-buy tickets online at Tickets Tonight. If you buy by phone, there is a surcharge - avoid it by purchasing online.
-the $5 extra for reserved seating is worth it
-bring blankets and insect repellent for nice days; blankets and rain gear if there are clouds in the sky
-you'll need to pay for parking in Stanley Park
-there is a cafe & vendors selling snacks at the usual inflated prices
-it'a late night, especially if you need to drive back to the burbs, but worth it!

That looks totally brilliant. We'll have to build that into our summer plans when A is just a little bit older.

Thanks for sharing!

TUT sounds like a fabulous time. I wish I lived near so I could go!

Your post 'the sound of that car' brought tears to my eyes.
