We recently decided to volunteer to foster dogs for some local non profit rescue associations.
Last week, young Nelly came to stay with us while she waits for her forever home.
She's from Bella Bella, a small first nations reserve off the coast of BC. The area is troubled by a number of social difficulties. Pets there often don't get the care and attention they deserve. There are no veterinary services, and most animals are not spayed or neutered, so there is a significant pet overpopulation problem.
Nelly is a dog that has been given a chance at a better life due to the work of Big Heart Rescue.
She was flown down to the Lower Mainland, spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, treated for fleas and worms. She's staying with us until her new owners are found.
Nelly and Daisy have been getting along very well.
There has been lots of bitey face, and wrestling, and chasing.
Daisy, I think, wishes that the youngster slept more. Nelly, I think, wishes that Daisy would wake up more to play.
They have been great together, though walking them together has been interesting. Daisy has a pretty much perfect heel, but Nelly is still learning everything (walking on leash, living inside a house, what furniture you can jump on and what furniture you can't, why sticking your nose right up to a hissing cat is not a good idea, that plasticine figures should not be chewed, that you don't need to gulp your food because more will appear again soon, and nobody will take it away from you......)

Remember: spay and neuter your pets. And if you're looking for a new pet, contact your local shelters and rescue organizations. There are wonderful animals out there, waiting for their people to love.

She is darling! We have a full house now (and both dog and cat were adopted, one was from a shelter and the other was a starving wanderer), but if we were looking for a new pet and lived in your neck of the woods, she'd certainly be a contender. Hope she finds her forever family soon!

Shelter adoption should be anyone's first thought when contemplating bringing new furry friend into one's home. Here in NYC, there are pets who would LOVE a forever home. Many purebreds, too.
We adopted Nappo from Bide-a-wee on the East Side. He is a perfect gentleman, most of the time. ; )
