When we first heard about the terrible conditions at the superdome in New Orleans, I wondered, why didn't people just start walking? At the moderately intense 4 km/hour, people would have been able to get quite a distance in a day. I kept thinking, why aren't they doing that? Just walk away from the flooding on a major road, and sooner or later you'll meet some people willing to help you. Of course there are folks with mobility challenges who will need extra help but you can get organized with wheelchairs and strollers and get going.
Well, it turns out, people were not allowed to walk out of the city. I first heard it on the radio, in a report about some Canadian tourists who reported they were not permitted to walk out of the city.
Now there are stories popping up all over the web about people trying to walk out and being prevented by police/military. Here's one blog entry about it. Read the comments too.
