Most of us in the Western world make tons of choices - from small ones regarding breakfast foods to large ones such as jobs and careers. We are proud of our freedoms to choose our lives.
In Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, Barry Schwartz argues that all this choice leads to a lot of stress. Faced with all these decisions we are anxious to make the best one, and when we have made a decision, we agonize over whether it's the right one. Nothing is simple anymore. The intelligent consumer faces a staggering array of consumer advice and every purchase is a test. Is that the best model? The best price? Which features should I be looking for? Even in healthcare, we are now expected to be active, informed consumers.
And while there are great benefits to this freedom of choice, there is also a price. Schwartz examines the relationship between choice and happiness, and offers some advice for keeping at bay the stress of an ovewhelming array of choices in our lives.
